Our Bergamot
oil, from the Ivory Coast, is sweet and characteristically citrus
but warm and with uniquely floral nuances. Bergamot is a fruit the
size of an orange, with a yellow color similar to a lemon, and has
a pleasant fragrance. Citrus bergamot is native to Asia and is
commercially grown in Calabria (Italy), in France, and the finest
specimens come from the Ivory Coast. Bergamot grows on small
trees which blossom during the winter. The distinctive aroma of the
bergamot is most commonly known for its use in Earl Grey tea,
though the juice of the fruit has also been used in Calabrian
indigenous medicine as an herbal remedy for malaria and its
essential oil is popular in all kinds of aromatherapy applications.
Like all citrus oils, it can cause photosensitivity to
ultraviolate light. Therefore it is not recommended before
being in the sun directly or for long periods of time.
It refreshes
and balances the emotions and is especially useful in times of
anxiety and when dealing with depression. Good for bacterial or
viral infections of the mouth, including nasal mucus.
Bergamot is useful in stimulating poor circulation, while
relaxing and calming the nervous system. Bergamot has
anti-inflammatory and slightly diuretic properties, which also
makes it useful in treating varicose veins. It helps relieve
the pain, itch and swelling from insect bites and stings, while
repelling insects as well. A powerful antiseptic, Bergamot is
useful in the first aid treatment of minor cuts and wounds. It also
helps prevent scar tissue.
